Purchase of 1.8-megawatt data centre marks the pilot of a strategic, collaborative RND effort between Earth Wind & Power, Cloud&Heat Technologies and Bitfury.

Earth Wind & Power (EWP), a leading innovator in creating a sustainable bridge between excess energy and the exponentially growing demand for power for the High Performance Computing industry, today announces it has completed its first purchase of a pre-series data centre container from Dresden-based Cloud&Heat Technologies (C&H), a specialist in secure and energy-efficient digital infrastructures. This follows the recently announced alliance between the two companies.

RND collaboration launched with energy-efficient 1.8 MW data centre in 40-foot container

C&H will supply EWP with a 1.8-megawatt data centre in a 40-foot container, fitted with a specialized cooling system for extreme weather conditions including 144 servers that are specially designed with integrated water-cooling pipes that are connected to the container itself.

The combined set up of data centre container and integrated servers was developed together with Bitfury, the Netherlands based emerging technologies company, and is designed in such a way that it can be used in extreme climatic conditions and outside temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius to plus 48+ degrees Celsius, facilitating data centre applications in conditions that would otherwise not be viable.

At the same time, the data centre is particularly energy-efficient due to the closed liquid cooling system and no air filters are required. In addition, an interface for waste heat utilisation is installed, so that the energy efficiency can be further improved depending on the location and other factors. Other additional benefits include reduced noise emissions compared with other such units.

The unit is expected for delivery in Q1 2022 and marks the pilot stage of a collaborative RND effort between EWP, C&H and Bitfury.

EWP is presently engaged in strategic discussions with energy producers to establish partnerships that will utilise excess energy to sustainably power this, and other modules of this kind, with a view to providing a low cost and effective ESG initiative for the benefit of all stakeholders.

“The purchase of the first data centre container marks an exciting step in the growing collaboration between our companies, as we continue to enhance our groundbreaking ESG solution for tackling excess energy production and the exponential growth in global demand for power for data centre applications. We look forward to further enhancing our solution through continued collaboration with partners like C&H, who share our vision and complement our strengths,” says Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Wind & Power.

“We are very happy about this cooperation, as all partners share the same vision of a sustainable digital future and optimally contribute their respective strengths from the very beginning. This is a joint pioneering achievement that could be replicated in other markets in the future and a great example of what can happen when you work together beyond your own traditional value creation levels. Earth Wind & Power has a huge network and is opening up important new markets for us. This also applies to countries that may be underserved and have insufficient access to compute resources,” added Nicolas Röhrs, CEO and Co-Founder of Cloud&Heat Technologies.

About Earth Wind and Power

Earth Wind & Power (EWP) provides a sustainable solution for powering data centres by utilizing excess energy from wind, solar, geo-thermal and gas to cater for the increased computing power demand – without any negative impact on existing grids.

The company positions scalable modular data centre units at local power production facilities around the world, taking advantage of the most energy-efficient technologies to utilise the excess energy on site for HPC when no other offtake is commercially viable, or when demand and energy prices are low.

Led by CEO and Former Norwegian Minister of National Public Security and Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde, EWP was founded by pioneers from wind and solar industries as well as international E&P.
