Earth Wind & Power and Groq to Establish Pioneering AI Compute Center in Norway, Aiming to Set New Standards in Energy-Efficient AI Technology

Leader in Real-time AI Inference on Track to Provide Unmatched Energy Efficiency and Scale by 2025

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California/Oslo, Norway April 22, 2024 – In a strategic move to advance the European AI technology landscape, Groq, a frontrunner in real-time AI inference for generative AI applications, has partnered with Earth Wind & Power (EWP), to create the first vertically-integrated AI Compute Center in Norway. This facility will not only cater to the AI needs of Norway and Europe but also bolster Europe’s strategic capabilities in AI.

The planned facility in Norway represents a significant leap towards environmentally responsible AI development by using Groq’s LPU™ Inference Engine, which requires significantly less energy than traditional GPU setups. EWP’s role in integrating locally available renewable energy sources into the project underscores its commitment to sustainable technology solutions that align with the UN SDGs and the Paris climate accord targets.

Redefining AI Infrastructure Efficiency

Under the agreement, Groq commits to an initial deployment of 21,600 LPUs within 2024, with potential expansion to 129,600 by 2025, marking a bold step in reducing the environmental footprint of large-scale AI operations. “This facility will utilize a fraction of the power typically consumed by traditional data centers, aligning with our vision of sustainable industry innovation,” stated Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde, Co-Founder of Earth Wind & Power. “Our approach ensures that while we advance technological frontiers, we also protect and responsibly utilize our energy resources.”

Empowering Europe’s AI Ambitions

The AI Compute Center is strategically positioned to accelerate Europe’s generative AI capabilities securely and efficiently, adhering to GDPR standards and providing robust infrastructure previously limited to major US tech firms. “By harnessing EWP’s pioneering strategy of converting excess energy into computing power, we are setting a new standard for the AI economy, both in terms of scale and sustainability,” added Tybring-Gjedde.

“Besides the size, what makes this deployment particularly exciting is that it will require a fraction of the power to run vs. a GPU cluster. GPUs are notoriously thirsty for power, often requiring as much power as the average household per chip. LPUs use as little as a tenth as much power”, said Groq CEO and Founder Jonathan Ross. “The AI Compute Center in Norway will provide enough generative AI inference capacity to satisfy most of the needs of the country, and also offer European developers access to GDPR compliant inference infrastructure at the same scale that historically has only been available to US tech companies. This is just the start though, by the end of 2025 we intend to deploy more than 1.5 million LPUs world-wide, helping to democratize access to generative AI.”

The signing between Groq and EWP took place Tuesday, April 16 at Groq office in Palo Alto, home to the GroqCloud team, with a Norwegian business delegation in attendance.
